1940-S 10¢ WDDO-001

Description: A spread towards the center seen on the date, the designer’s initials, and slightly on IGWT.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  None significant.  Reverse: A die scratch runs ESE from the S in PLURIBUS to the right star.  Rim cuds can be found above the ITED in UNITED and above the STA in STATES.

1940-S 10¢ WDDO-002          "Best Of" Variety

Description:  A spread towards the center shows on the date, the designer’s initials, and IGWT.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A die crack runs NNE from the rim at about 6:30 into the base of the bust and then curves north well into the neck.  Obverse Stage B:  Two parallel die gouges run through the die crack on the base of the bust.  A die gouge can be found to the right of the top of the E in WE.  A die clash mark extends SSW from the underside of the chin.  Die clash marks protrude from the upper back of the neck.  A die crack runs from SSW to NNE through the left side of the wing and out to the rim.  The bridge of the nose is broken from die abrasions to remove die clash marks.  Reverse Stage A:  The reverse is a doubled die listed as 1940-S 10¢ WDDR-001.  A spread towards the center shows on STATES OF, the top of the fasces, the upper leaves, and the top right branches.  Mechanical doubling could be found on many of the leaves in the middle of the right side.  Reverse Stage B:  A heavy die scratch curves through the upper IT of UNITED.  Numerous abrasion die scratches run mostly from SSW to NNE on both side of the fasces.  Die clash remnants can be seen running through the outer leaves on the lower left.

1940-S 10¢ WDDO-003

Description:  A spread towards the center shows on the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die crack runs north from the top of the throat behind the chin extending to the rim just to the left of the E in LIBERTY.  Die clash marks from the olive leaves can be found around the nose along with evidence of heavy die abrading.  Reverse:  The reverse is a doubled die listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1940-S 10¢ WDDR-002.  A spread towards the center shows on STATES OF AMERICA, the upper leaves below OF, the right star, EPU, and DIME.  A die gouge can be found at the rim above the O in OF.  Die clash marks can be found at the leaves below the AME in AMERICA and above the ON of ONE.

1940-S 10¢ WDDO-004

Description:  A spread towards the center shows on the date and slightly on IGWT.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die scratch curves from north to south to the right of the back of the neck.  A die scratch runs from WSW to ENE through the upper OD in GOD.  Reverse:  Die scratches un from SW to NE through the upper right leaves and branches some of which are detached due to heavy abrading.  Numerous N/S die scratches run through the left leaves and branches.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A short die gouge runs through the bottom of the E in WE.  Reverse:  A small die gouge can be found below the I in AMERICA.

1940-S 10¢ WDDO-006

Description:  A close spread towards the center shows on the date, the designer’s initials, and slightly on IGWT.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A small die gouge can be found to the left of the upper T in LIBEERTY.  Reverse:  The reverse is a doubled die listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1940-S 10¢ WDDR-003.  A spread towards the center shows on the top of the axe and fasces, STATES OF AMERICA, the upper leaves below OF, the right star, EPU, and DIME.  Parallel die scratches run from NW to SE between the E in ONE and the mintmark.  Numerous N/S die scratches can be found throughout the reverse.

1940-S 10¢ WDDO-007

Description:  A close spread towards the center shows on the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A feeder finger abrasion can be found to the right of the upper B in LIBERTY.  A N/S die crack runs through the back of the profile and the front of the hair.  Reverse:  The mintmark is an RPM listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1940-S 10¢ WRPM-004.  It is an S/S West.
