2004 1¢ WUFO-001

Description:  This fascinating oddity has the statue of Lincoln on the reverse surrounded by raised circular markings.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die gouge can be found south of the right side of the B in LIBERTY.  Reverse:  None significant.

Comments:  This interesting variety was the subject of debate by some of the leading die variety specialists in the hobby.  Some compared the markings seen on the 2004 Lincoln cent with the so-called “Extra Leaf” varieties found on the 2004-D Wisconsin Statehood quarters which themselves would qualify as UFO varieties.
