1980 1¢ WUFO-001

Description:  A raised line connects the ceiling in the 4th Memorial bay to the upper left side of the 5th column.  My first look at the line suggested to me that it was a die gouge, but the longer I looked at it, the more it appeared to have character beyond that of a die gouge.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A nearly vertical die scratch can be found below the right side of the R in LIBERTY.  Reverse:  Several horizontal die scratches run through the word UNUM.

Comments:  I am not ready to chalk this one off as a die gouge.  Was it a deliberate manipulation of the design?  If so, why in that location?  We may never definitively know, but it certainly is an interesting variety that may be debated by the experts for years to come.
