1951-D 1¢ WRPM-041

Description: D/D/D Tilted and Tilted

Die Markers: Obverse: Stage A: Light, mostly N-S oriented die scratches run through the 1 and 9 in the date. A strong area of die damage, resembling a circulation hit shows to the SW of VDB (This damaged area is present on all examples of this variety studied thus far). A very light die crack runs above the VDB initials. Faded die scratches run SE from the front of the neck. A die scratch runs SE from the T in LIBERTY into the back of the bust. The previous die scratch is overlaid by SW-NE oriented die scratches. A long die scratch runs north between the L and I in LIBERTY. Stage B: All Stage A die markers are at least weakly visible including the die damage SW of the VDB initials. A strong E-W die crack intersected by a perpendicular die crack which runs north onto the bust shows above the VDB initials. Die scratches run SSE from the underside of the nose. Reverse:  Stage A: A light, N-S oriented die scratch grazes the right edge of the O in ONE. Two die scratches run north from the lower crossbar of the E in ONE. NW-SE oriented die scratches show to the NW and inside the lower opening of the O in OF. Stage B: A multitude of die scratches run in numerous directions throughout the entire reverse. Of note is a long die scratch that runs south from the underside of the left horizontal crossbar of the T in UNITED into the left wheat stem. A “V” shaped die scratch pattern shows above the E in ONE. A die scratch curves NE from the last S in STATES.

Description: D/D Tilted

Die Markers: Obverse: Stage A: Numerous, mostly SSW-NNE oriented die scratches run through the date and onto the front of the date. A die scratch curves to the south right of the S in TRUST. Light, SW-NE oriented die scratches show below WE in the motto. Stage B: The die scratch curving south to the right of the S in TRUST is very weak, but all other Stage A die markers are visible. A strong series of mostly SW-NE oriented die scratches show above the date and in front of the chin. A strong, WSW-ENE oriented die gouge runs though the upper O in GOD. A SW-NE oriented die scratch shows below IN and the G in GOD. A die scratch runs SW from Lincoln’s lower hair. Stage C: Most previous die stage markers are visible, but notably weaker. Stage D: Only a few of the die scratches above the date and in front of the chin and the die gouge above the O in GOD are weakly visible from previous die stages. A die chip shows on the forehead NNW of the eye. Reverse: Stage A (First reverse): Markers were difficult to find due to the circulated nature of the example coin. An E-W oriented die scratch shows inside the lower opening of the M in UNUM. Light, SW-NE oriented die scratches run through and above the left wheat tip. Stage B: All Stage A die markers are at least weakly visible. A distinctive, curving die scratch connects the D in UNITED with the R in AMERICA. A light, N-S oriented die crack runs along the right edge of the vertical crossbar of the T in CENT. A down sloping die scratch runs through PLURIBUS. Stage C: Most previous die stage markers are at least weakly visible including the distinctive die scratch from the D in UNITED to the R in AMERICA. Die chips show on the right edge of the vertical and horizontal crossbars of the T in CENT. Stage D (Second reverse): A NW-SE oriented die scratch shows along the SW edge of the C in CENT. A strong die gouge (dot) shows between the E and N in CENT. A die scratch runs from the underside of the N in CENT SE to between the ST in STATES. A NW-SE oriented die scratch connects the U in UNITED with the O in OF.

Die Markers: Obverse: Stage A: A light die crack shows above the VDB initials. A long, mostly E-W oriented die crack runs from the back of the bust onto Lincoln’s lower shoulder. Faint die scratch runs south to the right of the T in LIBERTY. Stage B: The E-W oriented die crack on the central shoulder and the die crack above VDB are stronger. A light die crack runs from the back of the eyebrow and arcs across the top of Lincoln’s temple. Reverse: Stage A: An E-W oriented die scratch connects the upper O and N in ONE. A series of SW-NE oriented die scratches run through the UNIT in UNITED. Distinctive, crisscrossing die scratches show around the CA in AMERICA. A long die scratch runs from the lower right edge of the left wheat stalk east below OF and the AM in AMERICA. Stage B: All Stage A die markers are still visible, but slightly weaker.

Converging die scratches show above the left side of LIBERTY. Stage B: All Stage A die markers are at least weakly visible. A fresh die scratch runs NE from the upper right side of the B in LIBERTY. A N-S oriented die scratch shows between the G in GOD and W in WE. A die clash now shows in front of the neck. Reverse: Stage A (First Reverse): Numerous, N-S oriented die scratches show throughout most of the reverse. Two die scratches run SW-NE inside the upper O of ONE. N-S die scratches show inside the C of CENT. A die scratch runs NNW from the lower E in CENT. A strong N-S die scratch connects the lower N in UNITED with the upper O in OF. A die scratch runs north from the top of the first A in AMERICA. Stage B (Second Reverse): Die scratches run in multiple directions below the RIBU in PLURIBUS. A strong SW-NE oriented die scratch runs through the T in CENT. Strong die scratches run SW-NE through the UN in UNITED. A NW-SE oriented die scratch runs through the D in UNITED.

Description: D/D Tilted

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Stage A: A light, WSW-ENE oriented die scratch runs through the first 1 in the date. A SW-NE oriented die scratch runs through the upper left side of the 5 in the date. An E-W oriented die scratch connects the 5 and last 1 in the date. Light die scratches run SSW-NNE above the RTY in LIBERTY and a strong die gouge can be seen behind Lincoln’s neck, NE of the Y in LIBERTY. Light die crack down the upper side of the lapel on the left. Stage B: Only a single die gouge on the lower lapel and the die gouge NE of Y of LIBERTY are still visible.  A strong series of die cracks run from the back of the eye and through Lincoln’s upper temple. Die crack runs all the way down the lapel and extends in the rim at 5:30 o’clock.  Reverse:  Stage A: Light die scratches run N-S between the upper wheat tip and the E in E PLURIBUS. A die scratch runs mostly E-W from behind the upper C in CENT. Die scratches run in multiple directions through and above the T in CENT. Numerous die scratches run SW-NE from between the C and A in AMERICA into the T of STATES. E/W die crack across the top of the E in ONE.  Die break on the lower right area of the vertical bar of the T in CENT.  Weak die crack in the field right of the lower area of the T in CENT. Stage B: Only faint remnants of some Stage A die markers can still be seen. A large die chip can be seen on the vertical bar of the T in CENT and in the field to the right of the lower T. A very light die scratch runs north from the upper N in UNITED toward the lower C in CENT.  Die break on the T of CENT is on the whole right side.  Stronger die crack in the field.  Die break at upper left wheat grain of the left wheat ear.

Die Markers: Obverse: Stage A: E-W die scratch between the D of GOD and the hair. Die clash at the throat. NNW-SSE die scratch between the lower right of the Y in LIBERTY and the jacket. Stage B: Die scratch under D of GOD still present. Faint die clash at the throat. A long die scratch runs NE form the front tip of the bust into the lower left corner of the last 1 in the date. A light series of die scratches run NE into the rim from the upper right side of the date. A light series of die scratches run SW-NE in front of Lincoln’s eye and the underside and bridge of his nose. Stage C: The Stage A die scratches in front of Lincoln’s eye and the underside and bridge of his nose are weakly visible. Die scratch under D of GOD still weakly present. A series of die cracks show around the back of the eye and E-W on Lincoln’s upper temple. A faint die clash line shows in front of Lincoln’s throat. Reverse: Stage A: Strong NNW-SSE die scratches at the O of ONE and the CE of CENT. Stage B: Two die gouges (dots) show to the north and NE of the upper left wheat stalk. A series of E-W oriented die scratches run between the C and E of CENT. E-W oriented die scratches show between the N and T in CENT. A die clash line shows through the lower C in AMERICA. Stage C: The die gouges (dots) above the left wheat stalk are still visible. The die clash line at the C in AMERICA is more pronounced. Strong die chips show on the T in CENT.

Die Markers: Obverse: The obverse of this variety is also a doubled eyelid that is listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1951-D 1¢ WDDO-004. A strong series of die cracks show NW of the back of the eye and across Lincoln’s temple. A long die crack runs mostly NE into Lincoln’s lower bust left of the VDB initials. Reverse: Die cracks and chips show on the upper E in ONE. A die gouge shows to the right of the lower N in CENT. Heavy die cracks show on the T in CENT.

Concentric die scratches show to the SE and east of the chin. Concentric die scratches show above and below the Y in LIBERTY. Concentric die scratches show behind the lower hair. A die dot shows in the hair south of WE. Reverse: Stage A: Light die scratches show inside C in CENT.  Small die gouges show right of the left wheat ear NW of U in UNITED.  A long curving die scratch runs from the right side of the second A in AMERICA NNE through the second S in STATES. Stage B: A series of die cracks show on the upper E in ONE. Faded, WSW-ENE oriented die scratches run inside the lower opening of the E in ONE. A die chip shows on the right edge of the horizontal crossbar of the T in CENT. Light, WSW-ENE oriented die scratches show inside the O of OF and above the left wheat stem.

Stage B: Only the die scratch between the 1 and 9 in the date and the die scratches around LIBERTY are weakly visible in this die stage. A light die crack runs across the lower bust above the VDB initials. Reverse: Stage A: A pair of die gouges show east and below the E in E PLURIBUS. A pair of die gouges show in the field to the right of the lower N in CENT. Die gouges show between the OF in OF and below the O in OF. Die damage shows inside the lower N in UNITED. A die crack runs to the rim at 3:00 from the central right edge of the right wheat stalk, NE of the last S in STATES. Stage B: The die gouges between the OF in OF and below the O in OF are still visible. The die crack to the rim NE of the last S in STATES has grown stronger. Die cracks now show on the upper E in ONE and on the lower T in CENT. All other Stage A die markers are worn away.

Stage B: All Stage A die markers are still visible. A long die crack runs north from the rim onto the lower bust just right of the VDB initials. Reverse: Stage A: A pair of die gouges show east and below the E in E PLURIBUS. A pair of die gouges show in the field to the right of the lower N in CENT. Die gouges show between the OF in OF and below the O in OF. Die damage shows inside the lower N in UNITED. Stage B: All Stage A die markers are still visible. No die crack to rim at 3 o’clock.

A long die scratch connects the upper C in CENT with the back of the lower E in CENT. A series of NW-SE oriented die scratches run between the upper T in CENT and the lower E in ONE.

Lathe line die scratches run though the TY in LIBERTY. Stage B: Strong die clash at the throat. Die gouge at the throat still visible. WNW-ESE die scratch between the first T of TRUST still present.  Stage C: The die gouge at the throat from Stage A is still visible. Die clash remnants show in front of the throat. Only the concentric die scratches in front of the eyebrow are weakly visible from Stage A. Reverse: Stage A: A die scratch runs SE from the center crossbar of the E in ONE. A N-S oriented die scratch connects the E in UNITED with the first A in AMERICA. Two parallel die scratches run ESE from the right side of the D in UNITED. Light lathe line die scratches run through the right side of STATES and AMERICA. Stage B: Strong die clash between the C and E in CENT and connecting to the I in UNITED. Strong die clash connecting the E in ONE and the N in CENT. Stage C: Die scratches run NW from the upper left corner of the T in CENT. The die clash shows below the lower CE in CENT and on the upper N in CENT are weaker.

Die Markers: Obverse: Stage A: Lathe marks near the rim showing sporadically above IGWT.  E-W die scratches between the W and E of WE. Stage B: All Stage A markers abraded away. Two faded die scratches run NE from the bridge of Lincoln’s nose and forehead. A die gouge (dot) shows on Lincoln’s upper shoulder east of the Y in LIBERTY. Reverse: Stage A: Feeder finger die gouge NE from the top of the left wheatear running through the top of the O in ONE.  Feeder finger die gouge SE from the right center of the left wheatear running through the UNITE of UNITED.  Very light die crack shows on the right of the vertical bar and the far right of the horizontal bar of the T in CENT.  Die gouge at the upper right of the E in AMERICA. Stage B: Stage A markers worn away except cracks on T in CENT and gouge on E in AMERICA. A die gouge (dot) shows below the lower left corner of the E in CENT. A die crack shows on the upper E in ONE. Three die gouges show in the field to the right of the lower right wheat stem.
