1988-D 1¢ Damaged Mint Mark Punch #1

Description: Apparent doubling of the bottom or the entirety of the upright to the west is the result of a damaged mint mark punch. It is not an RPM.

Description: Apparent doubling of the bottom of the upper serif is the result of a damaged mint mark punch. It is not an RPM.

 

 

 

1988-D 1¢ Damaged Mint Mark Punch #3

Description:  Apparent doubling to the east of the vertical bar is the result of a damaged mint mark punch. It is not an RPM. Note that this doubling may show up on true RPMs as well, such as on WRPM-018.

Description:  D/D West

Die Markers:   Obverse:  Small die gouge in the field WSW from the 1 in the date.  Die gouge under 19 in the date.  Die gouge above first 8 in the date.  Die gouge well above 9 in the date at the level of Lincoln’s chin.  Reverse:   Die gouge in the field when looking well east of the M in UNUM or SE from the S in PLURIBUS.  Die gouge above  O in ONE.  Vertical die scratch runs to the rim below the lower left branch of N in ONE.  Die scratch runs north from first T in STATES to the rim.

1988-D 1¢ WRPM-002

Description:  D/D Tilted

Die Markers:  Obverse:   Die gouge in field at level of center of Lincoln’s nose.  A tiny die gouge (dot) shows on the back of the nose south of the tip of the eyelid. A series of die gouges show below and SE of the Y in LIBERTY.  Rim ridge present around entire obverse.  A die flow line runs south from the right side of the W in WE.  Reverse:   Weakly struck lower ES in STATES.  Die gouge north of C in CENT.  Rim ridge present around majority of the reverse.  Die gouge above the left memorial base west of the top of the stairs.  A die gouge runs north from the upper right edge of the O in ONE.  Die cracks on upper E in ONE and upper C and E in CENT.

Die Markers:   Obverse:   Die gouges right of upper 9, under right side of 9, under first 8, right of lower second 8 in the date.  Die gouges on the nose. Reverse:   Heavy NE/SW die gouge between the LU of PLURIBUS.  Die scratch running NE under the dot left of the first U in UNUM.

Comments:  Similar to WRPM-016 but has seemingly different separation on the upper serif and separation on the vertical bar of the mint mark.  I would like to see an example of this die to determine if they could be the same die or are definitively different.

Stage C:  Die gouges inside G in GOD no longer visible.  Die gouges around TR in TRUST still visible.  Die gouges inside and around ear still present.  Die gouges under I and left side of B in LIBERTY.  Stage D:  Die gouges around TR in TRUST very faint.  Die gouges inside and around ear still present.  Die gouge under B in LIBERTY still faintly present.  Die gouge under left side of O in GOD.  Die deterioration more prominent.
