1936 1¢ WDDO-001          "Best Of" Variety

Description:  A very strong Class IV spread to the SW shows on the date, LIBERTY, IGWT, the top of Lincoln’s head, and Lincoln’s ear.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A circular die scratch at the rim runs CW from 8:00 ending above the U of TRUST.  A die gouge can be found on the upper back of the nose similar to some doubled eyelid varieties.  The first hubbing was from a hub with a broken left leg of the R in LIBERTY.  Obverse Stage B:  A die crack runs across the lower shoulder with a die chip at the center of the die crack (north of the V.D.B.).  Reverse Stage A:  None noted.  Reverse Stage B:  None noted.

1936 1¢ WDDO-002         "Best Of" Variety

Description:  A very strong Class V CCW spread from a pivot at about 10:00 shows on LIBERTY, the lower bust, the date, Lincoln’s eyelid, TRUST, and the bowtie.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A strong die gouge extends ESE from the rim through the TRU of TRUST.  A die scratch runs SW from the lower left I of LIBERTY.  The first hubbing was from a hub with a broken left leg of the R in LIBERTY.  Obverse Stage B:  The die gouge at TRUST is much weaker.  The die scratch from the I of LIBERTY has been abraded away.  Reverse Stage A:  None noted.  Reverse Stage B:  Die scratches run NE inside the C of CENT from the bottom curve of the C.  A die scratch runs south from the bottom center of the C in CENT.

Description:  A strong Class V CW spread from a pivot at about 5:00 shows on LIBERTY, IGWT, the hair details, and slightly on the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die gouge (dot) can be found inside the upper Y of LIBERTY.  A short die scratch runs SW from the back of the head to the left of the ear.  The first hubbing was from a hub with a broken left leg of the R in LIBERTY.  Reverse:  A die scratch runs SSW to NNE through the 2nd A of AMERICA and the E of STATES.

Description:  A CCW spread from a pivot at about 9:00 shows on WE TRUST, the eyelid, and the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  Horizontal die scratch through lower first T to the R in TRUST.  A short die scratch runs SE from the tip of the eyelid.  Die scratch from the top of the bridge of the nose SSE to the nose.  Die clash to the right of the throat.  Obverse Stage B:  All stage A markers no longer visible.  Die gouge centered between E and T in WE TRUST.  Die gouge inside left side of O in GOD.  Die gouge right of upper mid N in IN.  Reverse Stage A:  A die scratch connects the bottom of the two legs of the R in PLURIBUS.  Two short die scratches NE from the upper right of the second A in AMERICA.  Reverse Stage B:  All stage A markers no longer visible.  Die scratches run roughly horizontally through AME in AMERICA.  A die crack is present on the left middle portion of the left wheat.  A die scratch runs NW from the T in CENT halfway to E in ONE.

Description:  Very strong extra thickness shows on EPU, the dots, both wheat ears, and both wheat stems.  Lesser doubling also shows on ONE and OF AMERICA.

Description:  Strong Class VI extra thickness shows on EPU, the dots, both wheat stems, and the upper left wheat ear.  A Class II spread towards the center shows on UNUM and the upper right wheat ear.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  Three parallel die scratches run from WNW to ESE between the upper G and O in GOD.  Die scratches run from NW to SE through the US in TRUST.  A die scratch runs SSE from the underside of the chin to the vest just below the bowtie.  Obverse Stage B:  The Stage A die scratches are either very weak or missing.  Reverse Stage A:  A die scratch runs SSE from the bottom right of the T in CENT to the top of the E in STATES.  Two parallel die scratches run SSE from the AT in STATES to the 2nd A in AMERICA.  A nearly vertical die scratch can be found just to the right of the bottom of the E in CENT.  Reverse Stage B:  The Stage A die scratches are either very weak or missing.  A die scratch runs NE from the left dot.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Die chip (dot) west from the top the 3 in the date.  Reverse:  Die chips (dots) west and SW from the left lower side of the E in STATES.  Possible die dot shows above the left side of B in PLURIBUS.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A long die crack runs east to west across the upper forehead.  Reverse:  A long die crack runs south to the rim at 6 o’clock.  A die crack runs from the upper O of ONE to the rim through L in PLURIBUS.

Description:  A spread toward the center shows best on the right wheat ear.  Lesser doubling shows on UNUM and the right dot.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Die scratch WSW from the rim above G in GOD.  NW/SE die scratch between R of TRUST and the forehead.  Die crack from the rim at 7 o’clock, running NE into the bust and then turning and running over the top of the designer’s initials.  Reverse:  X-shaped die scratches in the field east from the top of the E in ONE.  E/W die scratch through the letters of NUM in UNUM, slightly above center.  Concentric die scratch shows at the rim above UM in UNUM.
