2000 1¢ WDDR-020 "Best Of" Variety Description: A partial impression of an inverted statue of Lincoln can be found below the normal statue. Die Markers: Obverse: A die gouge can be found on the bottom of the bust to the right of the center fold. A die gouge can be found south of the I in LIBERTY. Reverse: So called “trails” extend to the east from the top right of the Memorial roof. Submitted By: Billy G. Crawford Cross References: Crawford: CDDR-017 Comments: The unusual nature of the doubling on this variety suggests that a hubbing technician stopped the single-squeeze hubbing process (something the Mint confirmed that the hubbing technicians have done even though they are not supposed to), reset the hub and die while rotating one of them 180 degrees, and then restarted the hubbing press to finish the hubbing process. We feel that it is highly unlikely that the hub rotated a perfect 180 degrees while snapping back into proper alignment during the hubbing squeeze.

The second is an overlay of an inverted statue placed over the apparent doubling and shows how the inverted statue is a perfect match for the apparent doubling. The images are copyright Billy G.
