1957 1¢ WDDO-001          "Best Of" Variety

Description:  Class VI extra thickness shows on the date, LIBERTY, and IGWT.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A die  chip can be found in the lower B of LIBERTY.  Two parallel die scratches run from NW to SE above the Y in LIBERTY.  Numerous die scratches run from SSW to NNE to the right of the bust.  A die crack runs along the left side of the base of the bust over the designer’s initials curving out to the rim on the left side of the die crack.  Obverse Stage B:  Die chips can be found in the upper 9 and 5 in the date.  A die crack runs from west to east through the upper forehead.  A die chip can be found near the left end of the die crack running across the base of the bust.  Reverse Stage A:  Numerous die scratches run from north to south through the E of ONE and the T in CENT.  Reverse Stage B:  A die crack runs SSE from the lower right wheat stalk to the rim at about 4:00.  A die chip can be found on the lower T in CENT.

Comments:  This variety was featured in my 1984 book The Lincoln Cent Doubled Die where it was identified as 1957 1¢ 1-O-VI.  Earlier stages without the Stage A die chip and die crack may exist.

1957 1¢ WDDO-002         "Best Of" Variety

Description:  A Class II spread towards the center shows on the letters of LIBERTY, the 7 in the date, and the letters of IGWT.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A die clash mark extends south from the bottom of the chin to the bowtie.  A die scratch joins the upper left and upper right 9 in the date.  Obverse Stage B:  A die crack runs WSW to ENE through the upper hair.  A die crack runs west to east through the forehead.  The die clash mark at the throat is now very weak.  Reverse Stage A:  Short die gouges protrude to the left and right of the lower R in PLURIBUS.  Two die scratches run SSW to NNE between the O and N of ONE.  A die scratch runs north from the top of the T in CENT.  Reverse Stage B:  The Stage A die gouges are very weak.  The Stage A die scratches are gone.  A heavy die crack runs down the lower right T of CENT.  A die scratch runs north from the upper left N of ONE to the B in PLURIBUS.  A die scratch runs SSE from the bottom of the T in CENT to the top of the 2nd T in STATES.

Description:  An extra eyelid can be found below the normal eyelid.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A small die gouge can be found to the left of the bottom of the R in TRUST.  Reverse:  A small die gouge can be found between the bottoms of the R and I in PLURIBUS.  A die gouge can be found below the N in UNUM.  A die break can be found on the lower right of the T in CENT.

1957 1¢ WDDR-001         "Best Of" Variety

Description:  Class VI Extra thickness shows on the letters of EPU, both of the dots, both of the upper wheat ears, and both of the wheat stems.  The doubling is strongest on the wheat stems.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die gouge can be found to the right of the bottom of the 5 in the date.  A short, nearly horizontal die gouge can be found north of the B in LIBERTY.  Parallel die scratches run SW from the G in GOD.  Numerous die scratches run SE from the front of the head.  Reverse:  A die gouge touches the top of the left wheat ear.  A die scratch runs NNE from the upper right N of UNITED to the bottom of the C in CENT.  Two parallel die scratches curve from WSW to ENE in the upper C of CENT.  Three parallel die scratches run from NNW to SSE to the right of the lower E in ONE.  Numerous die scratches run mostly north to south to the right of the left wheat stalk.  Die clash remnants can be seen at the top left of the N in CENT.

1957 1¢ WDDR-002         "Best Of" Variety

Description:  A strong Class II spread towards the center shows on the letters of EPU, both of the dots, both of the upper wheat ears, and both of the wheat stems.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Two long die scratches run north from the top of the Y in LIBERTY.  Die scratches run SW to NE through the G of GOD.  A long die scratch runs north from the front of the eyebrow.  Several die cracks run through the hair and forehead.  Reverse:  Long X-shaped die scratches can be found to the right of the upper left wheat ear.  A die scratch runs north to south between the upper N and E of ONE.  Several parallel die scratches run NNW to SSE through the upper left T of CENT.  A short, strong die scratch runs north from the bottom left horizontal bar of the E in UNITED.  Several die scratches run NNE to SSW to the left of the bottom of the P in PLURIBUS.

Description:  Extra thickness and a spread towards the center shows on both wheat ears and stems.  Extra thickness shows on EPU and the dots.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  Parallel die scratches run from NNW to SSE to the right of the lips and chin.  A horizontal die scratch can be found just below the chin.  Numerous other die scratches can be found throughout the obverse.  Obverse Stage B:  New obverse die.  A short die gouge runs SW from the bottom right of the W in WE.  Numerous light die scratches can be found throughout the obverse.  Obverse Stage C:  A die chip can now be found inside the upper 5 in the date.  Reverse Stage A:  A die scratch runs SSE from the bottom right of the second U in PLURIBUS.  Die scratches run from SW to NE inside the C in CENT.  Numerous other die scratches can be found throughout the reverse.  Reverse Stage B:  The Stage A markers are considerably weaker.  Reverse Stage C:  Same as Stage B.

Description:  Extra thickness shows on the lower left wheat ear and stem, OF AMERICA, lower right wheat ear and stem, and slightly on EPLU and the intervening dot.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Die crack on cheek behind the eye.  Die crack on the forehead.  Die crack curving upward through the upper hair.  Reverse:  Die crack from right wheat to rim at approximately 3:30.  Vertical die scratches between N in CENT and first S in STATES.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A short, vertical die scratch can be found south of the N of IN.  Short, vertical die scratches can be found to the left of the upper and lower W in WE.  A small die gouge can be found to the left of the lower 7.  Reverse:  A small die gouge (dot) can be found above the right side of the 1st T in STATES.  Two small die gouges can be found above the ES in STATES.
