Description:  A light CCW spread from a pivot at 6 o’clock shows on WE TRUST.   

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Die gouge on the top of the nose that resembles a doubled eyelid.  Die crack from the rim at 7 o’clock that runs through the V and top of the D in the designer’s initials.  Reverse:  NE/SW die scratches running from under the left dot and the E of EPU.

Description:  Light extra thickness shows on LIB of LIBERTY, IGWT, and the date.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  Very weak remnants of the designer’s initials.  Obverse Stage B:  Designer’s initials are missing.  A die chip (dot) is in the area where the V of the designer’s initials should be.  Reverse Stage A:  None noted.  Reverse Stage B:  None noted.  The wheat ears are heavily abraded.

Description:  A strong doubled eyelid shows south of the primary eyelid.   

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Die scratch east from the upper right of the E in WE.  Light E/W die crack in the hair below WE.  Reverse:  NW/SE die scratches running between the N and I in UNITED.

Description:  Medium extra thickness shows on the date, LIBERTY, and IGWT.   

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Series of NE/SW die scratches below the 3 in the date.  ESE die scratch from the rim above the O to the D in GOD.  E/W die scratch through the top of the W of WE.  N/S die scratches through the neck.  Reverse:  NNE/SSW die scratches through the top of the E and second S in STATES.

1938 1¢ WDDR-001          "Best Of" Variety

Description:  Extremely strong extra thickness shows on both wheat ears and stems, the letters of EPU, the dots, the letters of USA, and ONE CENT.  Class II separation lines show on both wheat stems.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die crack runs above the designer’s initials.  A die gouge can be found at the base of the bust between the designer’s initials and the last fold in the vest.  Reverse:  Die scratches run from SW to NE below the last A in AMERICA.  Die clash marks run through the lower E of ONE.

1938 1¢ WDDR-002

Description:  A spread toward the center shows on EPU and both wheat ears.  The doubling is more defined on the wheat ears.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Lathe gouge through the top of the letters of IN GOD.  Reverse:  Numerous light die scratches show around the E and P in PLURIBUS.  Heavy die gouge on the left upper area of the B in PLURIBUS.  Heavy die gouge on the right center and left lower area of the I in PLURIBUS.

Description:  Light extra thickness shows on EPU, the dots, and very lightly on the wheat ears.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Strong die scratch below the OD of GOD.  Long die scratch from the center of the vest to the 3 in the date, which turns north into the field.  Reverse:  Heavy die scratch from the tip of the left wheat ear and running through the E, left dot, and PL of PLURIBUS.

1938 1¢ WDDR-004         "Best Of" Variety

Description:  Strong Class VI extra thickness shows on EPU, the dots, the top of the E in ONE, and both wheat stems.  A Class II spread towards the center shows on both wheat ears.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A short die scratch runs north from inside the top of the Y in LIBERTY.Two die scratches run from SSW to NNE to the left of the back of the neck.  A short die scratch runs from WNW to ESE below the left sside of the 1st T in TRUST.  Obverse Stage B:  The Stage A die scratches are much weaker.  Reverse Stage A:  A die scratch curves from the upper right of the 1st U in UNUM to the top right of the E in ONE.  Several die scratches run from north to south between the N and E in ONE.  Several die scratches run from SW to NE inside the E in ONE.  Numerous other die scratches can be found throughout the reverse.  Reverse Stage B:  Most of the Stage A die scratches are either very weak or they have been abraded away.

Description:  Strong extra thickness on EPU, the wheat ears and ONE.  Nice separation toward the center shows on the left wheat ear.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  None noted.  Reverse:  Left die dot no longer visible due to polishing.  Right die dot weak due to polishing.

Description:  Strong extra thickness shows on EPU, the dots, the top letters of ONE CENT, and the lower letters on OF AMERICA.  A spread toward the center shows on UNUM, the wheat ears, and both wheat stems.  Similar to WDDR-001 but not as strong.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  WNW/ESE die scratch connects the top of the O and D of GOD.  Reverse:  None noted.
