1938-D 1¢ WDDO-001

Description:  A strong doubled eyelid shows southeast of the primary eyelid.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Light die crack from the center of the eyebrow WNW through the head.  Light curving die crack over the designer’s initials.  Reverse: WDDR-002 Stage A:  Die chip on the left wheat stem, closer to the wheat ear and positioned below the O in OF.  Light die crack near the left wheat tip.  Miniscule die dot directly under V shaped central portion of M in AMERICA.  Two small die gouges are present touching inside of the lower E in AMERICA (marker most easily seen on Stage B of the WDDR-002 listing below).

1938-D 1¢ WDDR-001          "Best Of" Variety

Description:  Extremely strong Class VI extra thickness shows on both wheat ears and stems, the letters of EPU, the dots, the letters of USA, and ONE CENT.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  This variety has a D/D West listed as WRPM-002, CRPM-001, 1MM-002, and RPM #2.  A light die scratch runs from SSW to NNE through the nose.  A short die scratch runs from NNW to SSE at the eye.  Obverse Stage B:  A small die chip can be found at the top of the head below the E in WE.  Obverse Stage C:  A light die crack runs from west to east at the center of the head.  Reverse Stage A:  A die scratch runs SSE from the right side of the center horizontal bar of the E in ONE to the bottom horizontal bar of the E.  Die scratches run south from the upper left T in CENT.  A die gouge can be found above the left side of the D in UNITED.  Reverse Stage B:  The die scratch at the E of ONE has been abraded away.  Weak die scratches remain at the T of CENT.  Reverse Stage C:  Same as Stage B.

1938-D 1¢ WDDR-002

Description:  Extra thickness shows on EPU, the dots, and the right wheat ear.  Light separation shows on the E in EPU, the left dot, and left wheat ear.

Die Markers:  First Obverse:  WDDO-001.  Stage A:  Light die crack from the center of the eyebrow WNW through the head.  Light curving die crack over the designer’s initials.  Second Obverse:  Stage B:  Die gouge on the left side of the vertical bar of the E in WE, about one fourth up from the bottom.  Light, straight E/W die crack over the designer’s initial and chipped to the right side.  Split serifs on the mint mark.  Third Obverse:  Stage C:  Two short die scratches south from the rim between the U and S in TRUST.   Reverse Stage A:  Die chip on the left wheat stem, closer to the wheat ear and positioned below the O in OF.  Light die crack near the left wheat tip.  Miniscule die dot directly under V shaped central portion of M in AMERICA.  Two small die gouges are present touching inside of the lower E in AMERICA (marker most easily seen on following stages).  Reverse Stage B:  Stage A markers still present.  Light die crack with chips on the vertical bar of the T in CENT.  Reverse Stage C:  Stage A markers still present.  Stage B die crack slightly longer but partially removed on the right due to mechanical doubling on the T in CENT on example examined.

Comments:  It remains somewhat uncertain if Stage B should precede or follow Stage C given the examples examined.

Description:  A light spread toward the center shows toward the center on EPU and the dots.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Die chip on the left side of I in LIBERTY about a third way down from the top.  Reverse:  Die scratches run E/W inside the R in AMERICA.  Many NE/SW die scratches are in the area of STA in STATES and RIC in AMERICA.

Description:  Doubling shows as moderate extra thickness on IGWT and both wheat ears.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die gouge (dot) shows right of the upper ear. Reverse:  A die gouge (dot) shows at the inner tip of the right wheat.  A small die gouge (dot) shows to the right of the upper T.  A small die gouge shows inside C in CENT.
