Description:  A “bar” shows under the L of LIBERTY.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die scratch extends northeast from the top of the 1 in the date.  A small die gouge can be found to the right of the top of the Y in LIBERTY.  Reverse:  None noted.

1942-D 1¢ WDDO-002          "Best Of" Variety

Description:  A Class V CW spread from a pivot at about 1:00 shows on LIBERTY with the date spread slightly towards the center.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Two parallel die scratches run from north to south to the right of the bowtie.  A die clash can be found to the right of the front of the throat and another to the left of the back of the neck.  A die gouge can be found at the rim above the O in GOD.  Reverse:  A small die gouge (dot) can be found inside the upper C in CENT.  A short die gouge extends NNE from the upper right 2nd A in AMERICA.

Description:  Doubling shows as a tripled die obverse with areas of doubling visible below the L in LIBERTY and left of I in IN and both T’s in TRUST. 

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Faded die scratches show below the TR in TRUST.  A light die scratch connects the lower 1 in the date with the outer curve of the 9 in the date.  A light, die scratch runs south from the 1 in the date.  A diagonal die scratch shows in the field to the left of the mint mark.  Concentric die scratches show in the field NW of the 1 in the date.  A die gouge shows behind Lincoln’s lapel, left of the buttonhole. A vertical die scratch runs north from the R in LIBERTY.  Reverse:  Vertical die scratches show through the upper T in CENT.  A series of vertical die scratches connect the lower T in CENT and the second T in STATES.  Vertical die scratches run through the D in UNITED and first S in STATES.  A series of mostly vertical die scratches run through the C and A in AMERICA.

Description: A close spread shows on GOD, WE, and TRUST. Very light separation shows on the right edge of the 4 and 2 in the date.  
 
Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die gouge shows at the margin of Lincoln’s hair below the O in GOD.  A tiny die gouge shows to the right of the upper T in LIBERTY.  A small die gouge shows along the truncation of Lincoln’s bust, right of the VDB initials.  Reverse:  A long die crack runs NW from the upper left edge of the E in ONE, ending near the U in PLURIBUS.  An area of die deterioration shows to the northwest of the C in CENT.  A die gouge (dot) shows inside the opening of the C in CENT.  A die gouge shows to the right of the upper right wheat tip.

Description:  Extremely close doubling shows on the underside of the L in LIBERTY.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  The obverse is an RPM listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1942-D 1¢ WRPM-011 (D/D South).  A die gouge can be found to the right of the top of the O in GOD.  A die scratch runs parallel to the rim between the S and T in TRUST.  A die scratch runs from SW to NE to the right of the throat.  Obverse Stage B:  The Stage A markers are much weaker.  The doubled die and the RPM are barely visible on this die stage.  A die crack runs across the base of the bust.  Reverse Stage A:  A die scratch runs from SW to NE through the bottom of the P to the top of the L in PLURIBUS.  A die scratch runs WSW from the top of the 2nd A in AMERICA.  A die gouge is present well below E in AMERICA.  Reverse Stage B:  The Stage A markers are much weaker, with only the die gouge below E in AMERICA still clearly visible.

Comments:  This Stage B for this die was original noted to be paired with 1942-D 1¢ WDDR-006.  This was found to be incorrect as the mint mark position for that die shows different placement than WDDO-006.  The cross reference to that die has been removed.

Description:  A doubled eyelid shows to the northeast of the normal eyelid.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A series of diagonal die scratches run through the 1 and 9 in the date.  A series of vertical die scratches run along the back edge of Lincoln’s upper hair.  A hash-marked pattern of die scratches show in the field below IN.  Two die scratches show at the rim above the W in WE.  Horizontal die scratches show between the rim and the upper ST in TRUST.  A series of vertical die scratches show inside and in front of Lincoln’s ear.  Reverse:  A die gouge (dot) shows southwest of the upper left edge of the horizontal crossbar of the T in CENT.  A die gouge (dot) shows below the lower horizontal crossbar of the E in CENT.  Very light vertical die scratches show inside the lower opening of the first S in STATES.

Description:  Doubling shows on the underside of the L in LIBERTY.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  The obverse is an RPM listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1942-D 1¢ WRPM-008.  Stage A:  Numerous irregular die gouges are present across the cheek, jaw, neck, and shoulder.  A horizontal die scratch runs to the right of the D in GOD.  Two, mostly horizontal die scratches run above the letters UST in TRUST.  A strong, curving die scratch runs mostly southeast from Lincoln’s front hair curl.  Stage B:  All Stage A markers are still visible but weaker.  A die scratch runs from Lincoln’s upper hair to the rim, left of O in GOD.  A series of die scratches run mostly southeast from Lincoln’s front hair curl after abrasion.  Stage C:  All Stage A markers are still weakly visible.  Stage D:  All Stage A markers are extremely weak.  Reverse:  Stage A:  A series of die scratches can be found between the C of CENT and the second T of STATES.  A long die scratch can be found between the E and S of STATES.  Stage B:  All Stage A markers are still visible but weaker.  A light die scratch runs left of the left wheat tip near the rim.  Stage C:  All Stage A markers are visible but weaker.  A series of vertical die scratches show around the right wheat tip.  Stage D:  All Stage A markers are extremely weak.  The die scratches through the T in CENT and at the right wheat tip are worn away.  Light diagonal die scratches run NE to SW through UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the lower wheats.

Comments:  The doubling below L in LIBERTY is visible in all stages.  The RPM is no longer visible by Stage B.  The Stage A photos of this variety were taken by Brian Ribar for the Wexler Doubled Die Files.  Additionally, the 1942-D 1¢ WDDO-007 listing was found to be later stages of this listing, and has been added to this listing as Stage C and Stage D.  The doubled die is not listed by CONECA or Coppercoins, though they both list the RPM (CONECA: RPM #7, Coppercoins: 1942D-1MM-007).

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A long, diagonal die scratch runs north from the upper 9 in date.  A series of light, vertical die scratches show below Lincoln’s chin.  Vertical and diagonal die scratches show in front of Lincoln’s mouth.  Numerous, diagonal die scratches run through LIBERTY.  Reverse:  Numerous diagonal die scratches show around the left wheat tip.  A series of short diagonal die scratches show under the upper C in CENT.  A series of vertical die scratches show to the right of the E in ONE.  Numerous diagonal die scratches show below the O in OF.

Description:  Doubling shows on the obverse as a weak bar under the L in LIBERTY and as doubling on I of IN. 

Obverse:  Stage A:  Two faded die gouges show at the rim above the letters S and T in TRUST. A curving die scratch runs NE through the opening of the D in GOD towards the rim.  A series of light, SW-NE oriented die scratches show on and behind the back of hair.  Stage B:  Areas of die deterioration show along the right edge of the 4 and 2 in the date.  A faded die gouge shows below Lincoln’s chin.  All other Stage A die markers are worn away.  Reverse:  Stage A:  The reverse is a doubled die listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1942-D 1¢ WDDR-005.  A die crack runs north into the field from the upper right edge of the right wheat tip.  An area of die damage shows on the upper left wheat lines.  An area of die damage runs through the second S in STATES. A faded NW-SE oriented die scratch shows between the lower E in ONE and the upper T in CENT.  Stage B:  The area of die damage through the last S in STATES is still visible but more worn.  The area of die damage on the upper right edge of the right wheat tip is more worn, but still visible.  Numerous die gouges show in the upper and lower openings of the N in UNITED.  A die gouge (dot) shows inside the lower right opening of the O in OF.

Description:  Extra thickness shows on EPU, both dots, and both upper wheat ears.  The upper left wheat ear and some letters of EPU also have separation towards the center.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Stage A:  A die chip (dot) is present on the back of the neck northeast from Y in LIBERTY.  Stage B:  The die chip on the neck is still present.  A die gouge (dot) shows in the field below the right edge of the N in IN. Faded die scratches show behind Lincoln’s hair.  A long die crack runs NNW from above the eye onto the forehead.  A horizontal die crack shows on the central forehead above the previously mentioned die crack.  A die crack shows above the ear.  Stage C:  All Stage B die markers are still visible.  All Stage B die cracks are stronger.  Reverse:  Stage A:  A small die gouge (dot) is present to the right of the middle of C in CENT.  A small die gouge (dot) is present just above the diagonal bar of N in ONE, near the right joint.  Stage B:  Two small die gouges show above the T in CENT.  A die gouge (dot) shows above the O in OF.  A series of vertical die scratches run through the E and P in E PLURIBUS.  Stage C:  The vertical die scratches around the E and P in PLURIBUS are worn away.  The die gouges (dots) above the T in CENT and O in OF are still visible.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A series of die scratches run north from the rim to the northeast of the 2 in the date.  A series of three die gouges show to the southeast of Lincoln’s bowtie.  A series of die scratches run northeast from Lincoln’s upper forehead.  A vertically oriented die scratch shows in the field to the right of the upper Y in LIBERTY.  A series of faded diagonal die scratches show below the G in GOD.  A light, vertical die scratch runs north from the bridge of Lincoln’s nose.  A die gouge runs from the rim toward the lower bust, left of the VDB initials.  A series of concentric die scratches show between the rim and Lincoln’s lower bust.  Reverse:  Die damage shows around the first U in PLURIBUS.  Areas of die damage show along the lower right edge of the O in ONE.  An area of scattered die damage shows between the lower E and N in CENT.  A mostly east to west oriented die scratch connects the letters E and D in UNITED.  An east to west oriented die scratch shows in the field above the right edge of the M in AMERICA.  A die gouge shows to the northeast of the last S in STATES.

A diagonal die scratch shows to the right of Lincoln’s eye.  A series of diagonal die scratches show between the letters RUS in TRUST.  Reverse:  An area of die damage shows to the NW of the C in CENT.  Areas of die damage show at both intersections of the vertical and horizontal crossbars of the E in ONE.  A die gouge (dot) shows along the SW edge of the O in OF. A die gouge (dot) shows well below the B in PLURIBUS.
