Die Markers: Obverse: A short die scratch runs ENE from the top of the bowtie. A short die scratch runs NNE to the right of the beard while another runs north to the right of the lips. Reverse: A die gouge (dot) can be found above the right side of the T in CENT. A die crack runs through the upper left wheat lines.

Die Markers:Obverse Stage A: The obverse is also an RPM listed in the Wexler RPM files as 1939-S 1¢ WRPM-001. It is an S/S Northeast. Lathe mark located under the back of the bust near the rim. Obverse Stage B: Stage A marker still present. E/W die crack on the head and hair below the hairline. Obverse Stage C: Stage B crack in the head still present. Obverse Stage D: Stronger die crack in the hair. Reverse Stage A: Die gouge right of center below the S in PLURIBUS. Reverse Stage B: Stage A marker still present. Three die cracks on the right wheat grains. Two die cracks on the right wheat lines. Die cracks on the upper right and left wheat grains of the left whet ear. Die cracks on the left wheat lines. Reverse Stage C: New reverse die. NW/SE die scratch between the lower area of the I and T of UNITED. NW/SE die scratch through the upper section of the first A in AMERICA. Short die scratch SW from the (centered) underside of the center bar of the E in CENT to the vertical bar. Reverse Stage D: Heavy die scratch south from the lower center of the S of PLURIBUS. Stage C scratches are weaker.
