1940-S 1¢ WRPM-001 "Best Of" Variety Description: S/S Northeast Die Markers: Obverse Stage A: The obverse of this variety is a doubled die listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1940-S 1¢ WDDO-003 with doubling spread towards the center on IGWT and LIBERTY. A die gouge can be found to the right of the bowtie. Short die scratch southeast from the nostril. Obverse Stage B: Stage A die scratch still present. Weak die crack over the designer’s initials. Obverse Stage C: Stage A die scratch still present. Die crack over the designer’s initials extends further to the right. Reverse Stage A: No prominent die markers. Reverse Stage B: Weak die crack in the lower right wheat grains of the right wheat ear. Reverse Stage C: Die crack at the wheat grains is stronger. Die crack from the inside bottom center of the O in ONE to the IB of PLURIBUS. Light die crack from the upper left of the E in ONE to the dot between PLURIBUS and UNUM. 1940-S 1¢ WRPM-002 "Best Of" Variety Description: S/S Northwest Die Markers: Obverse: Die scratches north from the Y in LIBERTY. Die scratches north from the back of the collar. Reverse: No prominent die markers. Submitted By: Lloyd Hanson Cross References: CONECA: RPM #8 Comments: This variety was listed as RPM #3 in the original The RPM Book by John A. Wexler and Tom Miller which was published in 1983. When CONECA assumed ownership of my original RPM Files this listing was deleted from the files most likely because a specimen could not be tracked down to verify. It was replaced by the variety that I have listed as WRPM-011. CONECA eventually did track down a specimen and relisted it as CONECA RPM #8.
1940-S 1¢ WRPM-003 "Best Of" Variety Description: S/S Northeast Die Markers: Obverse: Die scratch SW from left center of the 9 in the date. Circular lathe mark on most of the obverse. Die scratch NNE from the upper left of the Y in LIBERTY. Reverse: Die crack from the rim at 12:15 running SSE through the lower left of the S in PLURIBUS and through the upper left of the E in ONE. E/W die crack through the UM of UNUM. Die crack from the rim at 4:00 running NW to the wheat ear. Die crack along the right wheat grain of the right wheat ear. Die from the rim at 8:00 running NE into the left side wheat grain of the left wheat ear then turning upward and running through the wheat grains and the wheat lines. Die crack south from the lower right of the E of CENT through the left side of the D in UNITED to the left upper side of the M in AMERICA. Light die crack SE from the lower center of the S in PLURIBUS to the upper left of the E in ONE. Die crack east from the upper right of the O in ONE to the upper left of the N in ONE. Light die crack southeast from the lower right of the O of ONE to the upper left of the N of CENT. Die crack south by east from the bottom of the T in UNITED, through the first A in AMERICA to the rim at 6:15. Die crack southwest from the rim at 3:00 to the right wheat ear. 1940-S 1¢ WRPM-005 "Best Of" Variety Description: S/S North Die Markers: Obverse Stage A: SSE die scratches from the 4 in the date running along the right side of the mint mark. N/S die scratch between the upper left of the mint mark and the lower area of the 9 in the date. Lathe marks above IN GOD and under the bust extending beyond the bust on the left side. Obverse Stage B: Die scratches abraded away. Lathe marks are weaker. Reverse Stage A: NW/SE die scratches inside the M in UNUM on the lower right. Reverse Stage B: Die scratch still present. Die crack from the rim at 10:30 running SE to the wheat tip. Die crack from the rim at 4:15 running NNW to the wheat ear. 1940-S 1¢ WRPM-006 "Best Of" Variety Description: S/S/S East & East Die Markers: Obverse Stage A: Die crack east from the front of the shoulder running into the lapel then turning SE and running into the rim. Obverse Stage B: Die crack from the rim at 7:00 running NE to the bust. Obverse Stage C: Stage A and B die markers still present. Obverse Stage D: Die crack from the rim at 7:00 runs into shoulder then turns NNE to the back of the shoulder. New WNW/ESE die crack on the shoulder between the two previous die cracks. Die crack through lapel to rim is stronger. Reverse Stage A: Die crack NE from the rim at 9:00 turning north and running up the wheat grains on the left side of the left wheat ear. Die crack from the upper left of the O in ONE running NNW through the left side of the L in PLURIBUS to the rim. Reverse Stage B: New reverse die. Very heavy die crack SE from the rim at 10:00 running down the left side of the wheat ear and exiting SW at 8:00 and running to the rim. Reverse Stage C: Die cracks are into the rim. Die crack from the rim at 9:00 running east to the stage B die crack. Reverse Stage D: New reverse (3rd) die. Light die cracks on the right side of the right wheat ear. A die gouge runs SSW from the rim to the right of the 2nd T in TRUST. A die gouge (dot) can be found in the field well north of the R in LIBERTY. Obverse Stage B: No prominent die markers. Reverse Stage A: Die crack SSW from the rim at 2:00 running into the wheat lines of the right wheat ear. 1940-S 1¢ WRPM-013 Description: S/S West Die Markers: Obverse Stage A: Primary mint mark is higher and closer to the 9 than WRPM-010 and WRPM-018. Also has separation at upper serif not associated with WRPM-010 or WRPM-018. Primary mint mark is higher than WRPM-014, WRPM-015, WRPM-016 and WRPM-017. Circular die scratch between the 1 and 9 of the date. ENE die scratch from the top of the vest into the field. East by north/west by south die scratch on the upper area of the vest. Lathe marks near the rim above the OD in GOD to the W in WE. Small die gouge at the rim at 10:15. Die scratch south by east from the bottom of the T in LIBERTY. Die gouge at the rim at 7:00. Signs of light die deterioration show only near the rim. Obverse Stage B: Die scratches at the 1 and 9 are abraded away. Die scratch from the vest into the field is abraded away. All other stage A die markers are weaker. Heavier die deterioration is showing near the rim. Obverse Stage C: All previous die markers abraded away except the die gouge at the rim at 10:15. Stronger signs of die deterioration near the rim. Obverse Stage D: Die gouge at the rim still present. Very strong die deterioration near the rim showing. Reverse Stage A: Light die crack from the lower right of the second U in PLURIBUS running southwest through the upper left of the E in ONE. N/S die crack on the right wheat ear beginning at the lower right wheat grains then shifting through the upper left wheat grains. Reverse Stage B: Stage A die crack at the U in PLURIBUS is stronger. Die crack at the right wheat is still present. Reverse Stage C: New reverse die. Lathe marks near the rim above most of PLURIBUS. Reverse Stage D: Lathe marks are weaker above PLURIBUS.
