1997 1¢ WDDO-001          “Best Of” Variety

Description:  Strong doubling on Lincoln’s earlobe the hair curl at the top of the ear.  There are numerous other less obvious points of doubling throughout the hair.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  Short die gouge north from upper right 1st 9.  Vertical die scratch connects ends of top two horizontal bars of E in LIBERTY.  Obverse Stage B:  Small die gouge inside upper D of GOD.  Two die gouges at rim below bust at about 5:30.  Obverse Stage C:  Same as Stage B.  Obverse Stage D:  Die gouge outside the D in GOD.  Metal flow lines run through IGWT to the rim.  Reverse Stage A:  Die chip on upper left cornice.  Die crack top of right cornice to rim through I of AMERICA.  Reverse Stage B:  New reverse die.  Die gouge inside upper R of AMERICA.  Short die gouge from top right of 3rd column to top center of 3rd bay.  Short die gouges just NE of the top of the 5th column.  Reverse Stage C:  The die gouge inside the upper R in AMERICA remains but other die gouges have been abraded away.  Reverse Stage D:  New reverse die.  Small depression just left of the left cornice.  Small die gouge east of the center of the 10th column.

Description:  Doubling shows on the left side of the 7th Memorial column to the right of the lower legs of the statue.  A small partial extra leg can be found between the lower legs of the statue.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A die gouge can be found above the right side of the 7.  A die gouge touches the underside of the left end of the horizontal crossbar of the 7.  A small die gouge can be found to the left ofthe center of the 1.  A die gouge touches the front of the vest south of the 1st 9.  Reverse:  A die scratch runs from SSW to NNE between the last S in STATES and the O in OF. A short die scratch runs SSW from the bottom of the O in OF.  A die gouge can be found between the lower N and T of CENT.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A strong die gouge, resembling “Finger Feeder Damage,” runs north from the front of Lincoln’s bust, left of the 1 in the date.  Light die scratches run SE from Lincoln’s lips and upper chin.  A strong die gouge runs north towards the rim inside the upper U in TRUST.  A series of small die gouges (dots) show throughout the letters of GOD.  Reverse:  A die gouge runs SW from the tip of the left memorial base.  Two die gouges show between the lower O and N in ONE.  A small die gouge (dot) shows inside upper memorial bay 11.
